Get Home Safe with Zurich Malaysia this Chinese New Year

As Malaysians preparing to go home and spend time or having reunion with family this Chinese New Year, travel across the country is expected to increase on both roads and in the air. A bit of planning can help make the festive season smoother, safer, and less stressful.

During the 2025 Chinese New Year travel period, authorities reported 639 road accidents, which is a six percent drop compared to last year. While this is a good sign, the large number of travelers means that everyone on the road should stay cautious and alert at all times.

Additionally, local airlines have added hundreds of extra flights during the Chinese New Year to meet the higher demand for travel, which shows that more people will be traveling both by car and by air across the country.

To help Malaysians travel more safely this festive season, here are a few essential reminders to keep in mind.

Road safety reminders

  1. Conduct a pre-trip vehicle inspection, including tires, brakes, engine fluids and lights.
  2. Plan journeys ahead and avoid peak travel hours where possible using real-time navigation apps.
  3. Take a 15-minute break every two hours or switch drivers to prevent fatigue.
  4. Ensure children are secured in proper car seats and all passengers wear seatbelts.
  5. Keep a basic emergency kit in your vehicle, including first aid supplies, water and a flashlight.

Flight safety reminders

  1. Choose morning or nonstop flights where possible and enable airline alerts for timely updates.
  2. Pack essentials such as medications and important documents in your carry-on luggage.
  3. Get travel insurance/takaful early, as coverage often applies only if bought before disruptions are forecasted.
  4. Stay hydrated, move around during long flights and allow extra time for airport check-in and security screening.

Additionally, as many households are left unattended while families travel during the festive period, it is equally important to remain mindful of home safety to prevent avoidable incidents while away.

Home safety reminders

  1. Switch off electrical appliances and turn off water taps before leaving home.
  2. Ensure all doors and windows are properly locked, including sliding doors and back entrances
  3. Leave spare keys with a trusted friend or family member for added peace of mind.
  4. Inform trusted neighbours that you will be away, so they can help keep an eye on your home.

This Chinese New Year, Zurich Malaysia encourages everyone to prioritise safety at every stage of their journey, so the celebrations remain joyful from start to finish.
