Sony has officially launched the FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS (SEL400800G) – the brand’s first 800 mm super-telephoto zoom G Lens.
This new Alpha telephoto lens offers clear images throughout the zoom range, attractive background blur, and quick, accurate autofocus. Its inner-zoom design keeps the center of gravity stable for better framing. It’s also compatible with optional 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, extending the maximum focal length to 1600 mm, making it perfect for capturing birds, wildlife, sports, aircraft, and landscapes.

The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is a super telephoto lens that covers a 400 mm to 800 mm range and can reach up to 1600 mm with a 2x teleconverter. Its inner-zoom design keeps the lens length constant, maintaining a stable center of gravity for better handling. The lens also has a smooth zoom ring for accurate adjustments and is designed to prevent accidental changes in focal length.
Beautiful rendering and natural bokeh throughout the zoom range
The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS features an 11-blade circular aperture that produces beautiful ball bokeh and a smooth background with a narrow depth of field. Six ED glass elements reduce chromatic aberration, while minimizing flare and ghosting in backlit conditions for stunning photography.
Fast, precise AF captures even the quickest subjects
Two precision motors drive the FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS’s focus for quick and accurate adjustments. It tracks the Alpha 9 III’s burst speed of 120 fps and operates quietly, allowing for more possibilities. A focus range switch (FULL/10m-NEAR/∞-8m) helps optimize control for different distances. Focus breathing is minimized for better movie quality.
Solid support for handheld or tripod-mounted shooting
The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS allows for steady handheld shooting due to its built-in Optical SteadyShot TM image stabilisation. It’s even more stable with an Alpha body that has image stabilisation. Its durable components, balanced design, and fixed foot enhance reliability and performance. When using a tripod, the foot can be easily rotated for horizontal or vertical orientation, accommodating different shooting subjects.
High-level control and reliability for any situation
Three focus hold buttons positioned at 90° increments around the FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS lens make it easy to use in any orientation, with additional functions assignable to the buttons as needed. The lens is designed to resist dust and moisture, ensuring reliability, and features a front element with a fluorine coating that repels contaminants and simplifies cleaning. Full-time DMF allows for automatic engagement of manual focus when the focus ring is turned, facilitating easy fine adjustments or complete focus changes. Lastly, the new lens hood design includes a lock button and filter opening for straightforward operation.
