Recently, Sony Malaysia has invited selected media to experience their latest full-frame mirrorless camera, the a9 III, at the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.

As usual, we were briefed about the camera specifications and features by Sony Malaysia representatives. The new Sony a9 III key features are as per below.

  • 24.6MP Full-Frame Global Shutter Sensor
  • Up to 120 fps Cont. Shooting with AF/AE
  • Pre-Capture Function; Speed Boost Button
  • Flash Sync at up to 1/8While 0,000 Sec.
  • 4K 120p 10-bit Video; S-Log3 & S-Cinetone

  • 9.44m-Dot EVF with 240 fps Refresh Rate
  • 3.2″ 2.1m-Dot 4-Axis Touchscreen LCD

While I may not be a professional photographer nor videographer, I think there is three features that will benefit any professionals and enthusiasts. Firstly, the a9 III is capable of capturing up to 120 fps, which makes it perfect for sports or nature photographer. Secondly, there is a Pre-Capture Function, which helps to capture 1 seconds early when the user starts to press the shutter button. Last but not least, the ability to capture up to 4K 120p 10-bit Video with S-Log3 & S-Cinetone. The a9 III is uses a Global Shutter Sensor which helps to capture photos without any flicker.

For the hands-on experience, I will be focusing on photography only as we have limited time session. Starting off first, I was given the opportunity to test out the Pre-Capture Function with the archer shooting an arrow on a water-filled balloon. I was given instruction to press the AF button to activate the function, once pressed, there will be a notification on the Touchscreen LCD to notify the a9 III is ready for the Pre-Capture Function. The camera has been set to capture 120fps so I just hit the shutter button the moment the arrow popped the balloon, providing a satisfy result capture.

If you’re someone haven’t tried the function before, you will have a shocking unbelievable experience (like me) on how well engineered that a9 III to help capture the shot that matters. The moment captured as the arrow flying through the water-filled balloon is so amazing, as you’re able to see the impact on the water particles and balloon popping. The photos can be compiled to be a slow motion video as well!

On to the next scenario, where we have some skillful Malaysian basketball players for us to grab some shots with the a9 III. The 120fps burst shot has once again play an important role as the a9 III able to capture every movement made by the players. The impressive auto-focus on the a9 III also able to capture the players’ movement, albeit you can change your focus settings as well.

Overall, the Sony a9 III has been really impressive for those who needs take photos of subject that are constantly moving. The new Global Shutter and 120fps is going to help photographers to shoot what matters most especially for sports, motorsports and nature photography. Also, it is a capable device to capture videos as well. If you want to own the a9 III in Malaysia, the asking price is RM29,299.

Sony Malaysia also showcased the new G Master Compact Super Telephoto Prime (FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS), which is priced at RM29,899.
