Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 First Impression: Small refinements bring better foldable experience

With a new matte look on the Flip4. Graphite colour.

If you’re looking forward to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, my first impression for the device are positive because the company is trying to refine what has work and doesn’t work for its previous generation. So let’s find out more about the device.

Design – Looks like Flip3 but there’s more refinement changes

If you’re not attentive, you’ve might think that the Flip4 looks same with Flip3. However, going through the phone’s design, there are a lot of refinement changes. You will noticed that the phone’s exterior has a new flatter sides, matte finish on the cover (I guess it is similar to S22 series), and slightly smaller yet better feeling hinge. The new changes exudes an added premium feel while allows users to grip better.

Performance – Flagship performance guaranteed

Flip4 is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with 8 GB RAM and up to 512GB internal storage. The combination here is pretty good, offering a flagship performance for content creators who need their device to response immediately. Out of the box, it is also running the latest One UI 4.1.1 with Android 12.

Camera – Better hardware and software

While the Flip4’s camera (12MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP front camera) may looks like having the similar specs with Flip3, but Samsung actually has added a major improvement on the main camera sensor (65% brighter pixel sensor, Enhanced OIS, VDIS), NPU and software.

We have some early sample shots for you to view so let us know in the comments. However, I still think it has improved even though this is not a full review.

Display and Audio – Flip up your entertainment

Display and audio

For the Flip4 display, it is still the same 6.7 inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X with up to 120Hz refresh rate. The display is still good for viewing and scrolling while the brightness is fairly good for indoor and outdoor. While the crease is still around, you’ll really don’t care much about it once you’ve used long enough. For audio, it has a dual stereo speakers setup which give a fairly loud and crisp sound for entertainment and gaming. The main display and stereo speakers are pretty good for entertainment and browsing social media.

While not much has changed for Flip4’s Cover Screen, it still provides a nice view for notifications and good responsive touch.

Meanwhile, the Cover Screen is a 1.9″ Super AMOLED Display which provides a nice view for notifications and good responsive touch.

Battery – Bigger and faster charging

Now, the Flip3 was good but battery life was below average and Samsung heard about it. The company decided that Flip4 will have a 3,700 mAh battery with 25W Fast charging support. As this is not a full review, I can say that it can roughly last through out the day, however, I will give my final verdict in the final review article.

On a short note after experiencing the device for several days, I’ve really felt those refinement and improvement brought a better foldable experience for those who are planning to get one for the first time. In Malaysia, Galaxy Z Flip is priced at RM4,099 for 8+128GB, RM4,399 for 8+256GB and 4899 for 8+512GB. There is Flip4 Bespoke variant that goes for RM4,599 for 8+256GB but do take note that it takes at least 6 weeks to get the device as the Bespoke variant are made to order from customer’s customization request.
