Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 review: New upgrades continues to innovate the flip phone experience

This year’s Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 brings numerous new upgrades including the Galaxy AI features. Despite being on the 6th generation, the main question is “Does it still worth considering of getting one in Malaysia?” and the short answer is a pretty much “Yes”. Let’s learn more at below.

Design

The Flip 6’s aesthetic won’t be much of a different if you’re going to compare with Flip 5, apart from the new coloured camera rings. The new camera rings allows the user to identify their Flip 6’s colour if they are using a phone case.

New for the Flip 6 is the revised hinge, which now allows less noticeable crease on the foldable display and add dust proofing. If you’re going to compare the crease with the Flip 5, you will definitely see the difference.

Performance

Powering the device is the latest Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy and paired with the new base of 12GB RAM and up to 512GB ROM.

One great addition for the Flip 6 is the first ever in the series, a vapour chamber, allowing the device to have a long-lasting performance. This is proven with a long period of Genshin Impact gameplay which saw the device is able maintain longer stable frame rates and the Flip 6 only felt slight warm toward after more than 15 minutes of gameplay.

Software

Out of the box, Galaxy Z Flip 6 is running One UI 6.1.1 with Android 14. This allow the device to run Galaxy AI features such Google’s Circle to Search, Note Assist, Interpreter Mode, Live Translate, Photo Assist and many more.

While the AI features are great, it is largely based on the user’s preference as I am a frequent user of Google’s Circle to Search. The AI feature will benefit to those who are constantly focusing on productivity and connecting to the world.

Display and Audio

In the display department, only minor upgrades are added to Flip 6, where the 6.7″ foldable display can goes up to 2600 nits peak brightness. The cover display now feature an interactive wallpaper, where users can tap on the wallpaper to interact.

As per mentioned earlier, the new hinge mechanism now allows less noticeable crease on the foldable display. Even when touch on the crease area, you will only felt slight curve on it. Overall, the foldable display now feels better for gaming and entertainment on the go.

On to the stereo speakers, they still feel loud with adequate bass and clarity. If you’re focusing on entertainment, gaming and music, the Flip 6’s stereo speakers will proudly bring a smile to the users.

Camera

The Flip 6 now gets a new 50MP Main camera, which even provide better photo and video quality. The 50MP main camera now can provide almost lossless digital zoom, albeit best to keep it at the region of 4x digital zoom. Photos from the main camera are bright, properly saturated and high detailed.

Shooting 4K video with the main camera is also quite detail as you can perform slight digital zoom without losing the video quality.

The 12MP ultrawide camera is still fantastic, albeit it does showed some downside during low light situation for photos and videos. The ultrawide camera can’t focus on close subject, so anticipate to use it for landscape and groupfie shots. The ultrawide camera can shoot up to 4K 60fps and when used with the Cover Display, the Flip 6 is a serious device for high resolution vlog video.

The 10MP selfie camera performs good for photos and videos but with the ease of using the Cover Display and rear camera, you will pretty much forget it’s existence. The selfie camera can produce good selfie photos with good dynamic range and adequate saturation and contrast. The selfie camera can take videos up to 4K 60fps, so you can change the rear camera and selfie camera during recording.

When you fold and recording video with the Flip 6, now you have the zoom slider

If there is one nitpick for the camera department, I would love to see a telephoto camera added for the next iteration.

Battery

The new 4,000 mAh battery on the Flip 6 is definitely providing more confidence to last throughout the day.  Along with smart battery optimisation and the latest chipset, you can steadily get more than 5 hours of SOT.

Charging speed is still retained at 25W, definitely would love to see it get much higher charging speed as it has not been changed for several generations.

Final Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 in Malaysia is priced at RM4,999 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage and RM5,599 for the 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage. Pricing may feel steep for certain individuals, but taking a look on the improvement such as larger battery, new chipset, 50MP main camera and Galaxy AI features, its quite worth it to get one if you’re planning to own your first flip phone in Malaysia.

Highly recommended for users that are prioritising selfie, vlogging and content creation. Scores a solid 8.7 out of 10.
