HUAWEI Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and Open Re Sdn Bhd have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on artificial intelligence integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions. These solutions aim to support Malaysia’s growing energy demand in the renewable energy sector by optimizing energy consumption and managing peak power demands. The partnership focuses on creating a sustainable AI-driven BESS ecosystem that enhances energy efficiency, reduces operational costs for businesses, and aligns with national decarbonisation and sustainable growth objectives.
“This collaboration with Huawei marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s journey toward intelligent energy management. By combining Huawei’s world-class BESS hardware with OpenRE’s proprietary AI Energy Demand Response (AIE-DR), we are enabling industries to unlock higher energy efficiency, manage peak demand more intelligently, and move closer to carbon-neutral operations. Together, we are building a sustainable ecosystem that empowers local industries to thrive in the clean energy transition,” said Dr. Lin Horng Sheng, Chief Executive Officer of OpenRE.
“Malaysia’s energy transition will only succeed through intelligent integration between digital technologies and clean power systems. Together with OpenRE, we aim to strengthen Malaysia’s energy-storage value chain so that more industries can access reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy management solutions,” said Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Huawei Malaysia, Digital Power Business.
Huawei Malaysia, as a technology enabler, will leverage its expertise and innovation in Smart PV and BESS technologies, collaborating with OpenRE to provide Energy Management System (EMS) AI software and support for end-users. The partnership aims to create a sustainable ecosystem addressing emerging market opportunities by offering comprehensive energy management solutions across key industries. This aligns with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, which highlights energy storage as crucial for achieving a carbon-neutral target by 2050, enhancing grid flexibility and integrating renewable energy for smarter, sustainable power management.
The MoU signing took place at the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2025, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from October 15 to 17, and was signed by Dr. Teoh Boon Yew, General Manager (Business Development) of OpenRE and Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Huawei Malaysia, Digital Power Business. The ceremony was witnessed by YBhg. Dato’ Leong Kin Mun, Malaysian Green Tech & Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) Board Member; YBrs. Tuan Haji Ismail bin Mohd Amin, MGTC Board Member; Dr. Chong Lee Wai, Chief Technology Officer of OpenRE; and Zhang Xiaoming, Director of Smart PV and ESS, Digital Power Business, Huawei Malaysia.
