HEINEKEN Malaysia’s on-site solar panel helps reduced electricity needs and cutting down carbon emission

HEINEKEN Malaysia showed its commitment to renewable energy by enhancing its solar energy system at the Sungei Way Brewery, in conjunction of World Environment Day 2026.

The brewery has installed 3,500 solar panels that produce about 2,646 MWh of electricity each year, meeting around 17% of its total 2025 electricity needs and cutting down approximately 1,634 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. This initiative is part of the company’s wider strategy to improve energy performance and progress towards achieving net zero emissions.

Driving operational decarbonisation

Marcelo Heil De Brito, Supply Chain Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia, said: “Our solar installation marks a key milestone in our net zero journey, reflecting a deliberate shift towards use of renewable energy and smarter operations. It is part of a broader, integrated approach to improving energy performance across the brewery, where operational efficiency and decarbonisation go hand in hand. Beyond renewable energy, we are systematically optimising core processes and investing in energy-efficient technologies to reduce emissions, strengthen resilience, and build a more future-ready operation.”

Since March 2022, the brewery sources 100% renewable electricity via Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s Green Electricity Tariff programme. On-site solar generation and energy-efficient technologies also contribute to this renewable mix, reducing electricity-related emissions.

Additionally, 4% of the brewery’s thermal energy comes from biogas generated through its on-site wastewater treatment, minimizing fossil fuel usage and lowering direct (Scope 1) emissions.

These initiatives have led to a 45% decrease in Scope 1 and 2 emissions since the 2022 baseline, advancing HEINEKEN Malaysia’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions across its value chain by 2040.

HEINEKEN Malaysia is enhancing engagement with its value chain partners to support sustainability goals, including onboarding its top 40 suppliers into the UN Global Compact Malaysia & Brunei ESG Start Platform to promote better ESG disclosures and sustainable practices.

Renuka Indrarajah, Corporate Affairs & Legal Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia, said: “At HEINEKEN Malaysia, sustainability is embedded in how we operate, invest, and grow, driving long-term value for our business and stakeholders. This milestone reflects the tangible progress we are making under our Brew a Better World 2030 strategy to advance our net zero ambition. Beyond operations, it underscores our focus on delivering measurable impact through strong governance and strategic partnerships, while supporting Malaysia’s transition to a lower-carbon future.”

HEINEKEN Malaysia’s sustainability efforts have earned recognition through various national and regional ESG awards, including the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei Forward Faster Sustainability Awards, the Asia ESG Positive Impact Awards, and The Edge Billion Ringgit Club Awards. The company is also listed in the FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia Index, highlighting its commitment to strong environmental, social, and governance practices.
