Gin Lee 李幸倪 has recently dropped a new single When The Sun Rises (日出時讓街燈安睡) featuring Jacky Cheung 張學友, the Heavenly King of Cantopop. It was also reported that the collaboration was made possible thanks to the help of songwriter producer Eric Kwok.
In an interview, they candidly chatted about them teaming up and what great fun they had working together:
It was nothing short of a truly amazing opportunity to be able to work with Jacky Cheung. The difficulties they had to overcome was well explained by the Heavenly King of Cantopop. He says, ‘First of all, I have never left Universal Music. That makes it hard for me to work with artists of another record label. Second, I am constantly doing concerts in different places. I’d be away touring for a year or two at a time. It’s just because of the pandemic that I am in Hong Kong and so I can take part in this project. Third, this is a wonderful song. Such great lyrics by Riley Pong. I had originally asked Eric to let me sing the song. Then I knew it was for Gin and I thought maybe we could make it a duet. Fourth, Gin is an excellent vocalist herself.’ Having all four barriers cleared, we have this joint project for Gin and Jacky finally.
This song “When The Sun Rises” is about a lifetime of hard work done but with goals still unreached. With success yet to come brings the decision to take a break, only then to realise having already missed out on so many good things in life. Gin says, ‘This song is for all ages. We all want to slow down at some point in life to take a good look at where we are.’ Eric also feels that everyone who battles for a living day in and day out in the big city with no time to enjoy life would definitely identify with the song. To Jacky, he understands we all think about giving up at various stages in life but then those thoughts are great reminders to get us motivated and keep us going. He says, ‘What’s so good about this song is whenever we feel like giving up, we are faced with different choices. I, too, have questioned before if I should give up. Then coming to think of it, what else could I do? The idea to surrender creeps up on us time and again in life. They serve to alert us to take a good look at ourselves before deciding to continue moving forward.’
