Future Skills for All aims to upskills Sarawak teachers and students with coding capabilities

The Future Skills for All (FS4A) program in Sarawak aims to equip secondary school students, teachers, and education officers with vital digital skills for success in a rapidly evolving digital economy. Collaborators include ARUS Academy, CelcomDigi Berhad, MDEC, UNICEF Malaysia, and the Sarawak State Government.

FS4A courses, aligned with the national curriculum, are available online, through workshops, and offline kits focusing on computer science basics. The initiative has trained 237 students, 79 teachers, and 11 education officers in central Sarawak and plans to expand further next year. Initial results have seen students showcasing skills in HTML, python, and SQL through practical projects like a transport booking website for Kapit and an e-commerce platform promoting Sarawak’s dabai fruit. Sign language accessibility in offline modules ensures inclusivity for all learners, including those in rural or underserved areas.

MDEC CEO, Datuk Ts. Mahadhir Aziz, highlights the program’s role in closing the digital gap and fostering innovation nationwide. The FS4A program began in 2020, offering an online learning platform with instructional videos, notes, and quizzes aligned with the national syllabus. Specific efforts for the deaf community include Malaysian Sign Language interpretation in lesson videos. Offline kits facilitate coding education in remote areas without internet access, featuring engaging card games for teaching coding concepts.

Currently, over 37,000 students and 4,700 teachers engage with the FS4A program online, with plans to expand workshops and kits to meet community needs.
