
Marking a decade of cultivating tech talent, Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd concluded the 10th Huawei ICT Competition Malaysia 2025-2026 with students from Universiti Putra Malaysia, IMU University, and Xiamen University Malaysia winning top prizes.
Officiated by the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Higher Education, YBhg. Datuk Ts. Dr. Mohd Nor Azman bin Hassan, the awards highlighted Huawei Malaysia’s commitment to building a sustainable digital talent pipeline and advancing digital education in Malaysia.
YBhg. Datuk Ts. Dr. Mohd Nor Azman bin Hassan who attended on behalf of the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, YB Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud, commended on the great initiative of the Huawei ICT Academy, stating in his officiating speech, “The Huawei ICT Academy, through its certification programmes, further strengthens this ecosystem by providing students with structured, industry-recognised pathways to develop practical ICT capabilities.”
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) won the grand prize for the Network Track, led by instructor Ahmad Alauddin Bin Ariffin and students Logith Mohana Krishnan, Sashvant Vadevell, and Sio Zixin. For the Innovation Track, IMU University took the grand prize with students Sam Tao Kien, Keh Pei Rou, and Chee Yue Mei, under the guidance of instructor Thein Oak Kyaw Zaw.
Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) won two grand prizes, taking first place in both the Cloud and Computing tracks. The Computing Track team included students Meng Zijian, Wai Pui Shan, and Wong Wan Ning, guided by instructor Toa Chean Khim. The Cloud Track team consisted of students Wu Haoren, Li Haocong, and Ge Hanwen, led by instructor Dilshani Hansika Mallikarachchi.
Malaysia joined the Huawei ICT Competition in 2018 with over 200 students from seven universities. In seven years, participation has greatly increased, with this year’s 10th edition attracting more than 1,900 students from 43 universities across the country. Out of this competitive group, 16 teams achieved top honours in four categories: Network, Cloud, Computing, and Innovation.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, President and Chief Executive Officer of MMU, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud said “Through this competition, we are nurturing skilled professionals and visionary leaders who will drive Malaysia’s digital transformation and make talent our strongest national asset.” He added, “This competition is more than an academic contest, it is a platform that identifies, trains, and elevates the next generation of Malaysian innovators.”
Vice-Chancellor of the Huawei ASEAN Academy, Mr Oliver Liu stated that Huawei Malaysia plans to establish more Huawei Academies to build a strong digital education ecosystem that will support Malaysia’s vision to become the ASEAN Digital Capital.
“The Huawei ICT Academy is a platform that nurtures both students and educators, providing them with the opportunity to gain practical applications in cutting-edge fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing and data analysis. The Huawei ICT Competition complements this by giving students a platform to compete and display their ICT skills and ideas, while promoting healthy competition and knowledge sharing,” he said.
In addition to the four competition tracks, the Outstanding ICT Academy 2025 awards were presented to several institutions for excellence in digital education, including Universiti Sains Malaysia, Multimedia University, and Xiamen University Malaysia.
Ten educators received the Most Dedicated Instructor 2025 award for their contributions to ICT teaching, notably from MMU, XMUM, and Universiti Teknologi Mara.
The awards ceremony, co-organised by MMU and Huawei Malaysia, celebrated Huawei’s establishment of 53 ICT Academies in Malaysia and its training of over 54,000 individuals in digital skills, surpassing its target of 50,000 by 2025.
