Zhou Ye makes a hit with fans on iQiyi International’s “你好1983” (Dream of Golden Years)

The time-travel drama “你好1983” (Dream of Golden Years) featuring Zhou Ye and Zhai Xiaowen, debuted this week on iQiyi International. Zhou Ye, praised for her role as a brave general in “The Legend of the Condor Heroes,” stars as Xia Xiaolan, an office worker who gets framed and mysteriously travels to 1983, taking over the body of a girl named Xia Xiaolan.

From the beginning, she deals with poverty, bullying from her relatives, and the shame of being labeled as “improper.” There’s even a moment where she almost gets sold for a dowry. She stands up for herself by telling her grandmother, “You old hag, watch your mouth!” and firmly tells her father, “I will never go back to the Xia family, and I will never let Mom go back to be your slave,” showing her strong support for her mother. Later, she not only goes to university but also uses smart business skills to make her first money, starting by collecting wild duck eggs and selling fried dough sticks. She later opens a clothing store and gets into real estate, living by the motto “live life to the fullest after being reborn,” and sets out on a powerful journey as a strong female character achieving success. After its release, many viewers praised the show’s quick and exciting story. One netizen watched all the episodes in a row and shared their thoughts: “It was fantastic from the very first episode; it was satisfying, high-quality, and incredibly fast-paced.”

Unlike the usual portrayals of women in the 1980s as quiet and repressed, Xia Xiaolan’s bold and confident personality after time-traveling has connected with viewers, earning the show the title of a “female-friendly” drama. The first episode quickly caught the attention of the audience with scenes of arguments with relatives and starting a business selling duck eggs. It smoothly includes modern business ideas like discounts and free gifts, making it a fun and relaxing watch. The family story is also touching. Dong Xuan’s character, Liu Fen, initially keeps her distance from Xia Xiaolan but gradually learns to run a business with her daughter and courageously files for divorce from her abusive husband. Her change from shy to strong is done thoughtfully. Meanwhile, the warm moments between the female lead and her uncle’s family also touched many viewers.

The drama beautifully recreates the 1980s style. Zhou Ye appears with a simple, real look, moving away from her previous image. She shows off several retro 80s outfits, making it a visually pleasing experience. The character’s “stubbornness” and confident style have sparked conversations on social media, with many fans affectionately calling Zhou Ye “Mommy.” In an interview, Zhou Ye said, “Indeed, that’s my mommy’s era.”

The drama focuses on the growth and entrepreneurship of women, interspersed with a refreshing romance, and has been praised by viewers as “a very refreshing drama.” Zhai Xiaowen plays the male lead, Zhou Cheng. Having previously gained popularity for his role as Yang Yitan in the hit drama “Huai River Bamboo Pavilion,” his portrayal of the male lead has garnered significant attention. In the drama, Zhou Cheng, a young man from Beijing, gradually develops feelings for Xia Xiaolan after several encounters, even telling a friend, “She’ll become your sister-in-law sooner or later.” He is moved by Xia Xiaolan’s hard work and determination, and the two prepare for university together. The character also transforms from a charming young man into a talented elite lawyer. The overall romantic storyline avoids clichéd tropes, earning praise from viewers as “refreshing and not greasy.” The character’s gentle exterior yet unwavering devotion to love—a “puppy-like pure love warrior” image—continues to drive the couple’s popularity.

“你好1983” (Dream of Golden Years) also marks the first collaboration between Zhou Ye and Zhai Xiaowen. In an interview, when asked about the “rich mommy and puppy boyfriend” premise, Zhou Ye immediately agreed, while Zhai Xiaowen responded, “How did I become a puppy?” Zhou Ye then jokingly remarked that he resembled Zhai Xiaowen’s dachshund, “Tiger,” and their interactions were natural, relaxed, and quite humorous. In an interview, Zhai Xiaowen expressed his gratitude to Zhou Ye, saying she took great care of him during filming, actively easing his tension and helping him get into character—his words were sincere.

“你好1983” (Dream of Golden Years), blending period drama elements with commercially successful themes, is currently exclusively streaming on iQiyi International.
