Toyota’s all-new Alphard and Vellfire PHEV sets to go on sale in Japan on 31 Jan 2025

Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) has announced the sales of its all-new Alphard and Vellfire Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV; six-seater) models in Japan will begin on 31 January 2025. The petrol and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) models of the Alphard and Vellfire have also been improved, and sales will commence on 7 January 7, 2025.

The joy of comfortable mobility offered by PHEVs

The Alphard and Vellfire (gasoline and HEV models), redesigned in June 2023, embodies “the joy of comfortable mobility,” offering a space for drivers and rear seat passengers to share appreciation in various situations, whether with family or important visitors. The platform has been improved for better riding experience and comfort, catering to a diverse range of customers, from families to VIPs.

The new PHEV models enhance the quietness and riding experience for both drivers and rear seat passengers in various situations.

Comfort is improved with minimal noise and vibrations from the BEV, along with a low center of gravity due to the large-capacity lithium-ion battery under the floor. This design also allows for careful driving in quiet environments, making it ideal for chauffeured use. Air conditioning can also run on electricity without needing the engine on while waiting for pick-up, ensuring comfort and benefiting the environment.

The Plug-in Hybrid System allows BEV-mode driving for daily trips using stored battery electricity (range of 73 km), while the engine provides peace of mind for long-distance travel.

Improvements to gasoline / HEV models

All models now feature a Digital Inner Mirror with built-in front and rear dash cams as standard. The Z and Z Premier grades offer a JBL premium sound system (15 speakers) and a 14-inch rear-seat entertainment system for enhanced cabin comfort. Three exterior body colors are available for the Vellfire, including a new Precious Metal color that emphasizes the vehicle’s aggressive demeanor.

An eight-seater X grade has also been added to the Alphard HEV.

Overview of PHEV models

2.5-liter Plug-in Hybrid System for environmental and dynamic performance

  • PHEV models offer a driving range of 73 km on a full charge, allowing for daily trips on battery power. For longer drives, the engine supplements battery power to extend the cruising range.
  • A large-capacity lithium-ion battery is mounted under the floor, maintaining cabin space while lowering the center of gravity (-35 mm compared to HEV). This ensures a comfortable ride and stability with fewer vibrations.
  • A new Smooth Stop control system suppresses sudden nose-dives, stabilizing passenger seating for a comfortable ride.
  • With a high-output density drive motor, the PHEV models achieve a maximum output of 225 kW (306 PS) for smooth acceleration.
  • Achieves hybrid fuel economy of 16.7 km/L.
  • Engine noise has been reduced by increasing motor assist range and suppressing engine revolutions. Road noise is lower due to added sound insulation in the instrument panel and doors, along with urethane sponge in the body frame.
  • Auto BEV / HEV mode switching anticipates driving conditions, using BEV mode for efficient sections of the route, which helps lower fuel consumption.

Charging and power supply functions characteristic of a PHEV

  • The vehicle supports standard and rapid charging functions, with about 38 minutes needed to charge approximately 80% of the battery, offering significant time savings.
  • It has a 1,500W (AC 100V) external power supply function for emergencies and outdoor activities, including a socket in the luggage compartment and a power connector for external use.
  • The Vehicle to Home (V2H) system allows the vehicle’s battery to power the home during blackouts, using a separately sold V2H device.
  • There are two external power supply modes: BEV for leisure and HEV for emergencies. The HEV mode supplies power from the battery until a set level is reached, then the engine starts to provide electricity. This setup can last about 5.5 days with a full charge and fuel.
  • The “My Room Mode” lets users run air conditioning and audio systems from the external power source while charging, creating a comfortable space for various activities.

PHEV-specific equipment

  • The PHEV models feature 19-inch aluminum wheels with silver paint that enhances elegance.
  • A woodgrain steering wheel and Ultrasuede ceiling create a special cabin space.
