Taylor’s University has launched Lumicko, a multimedia streaming platform by its School of Media and Communication to enhance student learning and showcase digital productions. This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s growing digital content sector, which generated RM 5.31 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow significantly. Lumicko not only acts as a portfolio for students but also provides industry professionals with access to emerging creative talent, strengthening connections between academia and the industry.
Professor Dr Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Leisure Management at Taylor’s University, said: “Lumicko is more than just a streaming platform, it is a transformational learning ecosystem. By giving our students the opportunity to produce, publish, and present their work in a real-world environment, we are preparing them to enter the industry with confidence, creativity, and an understanding of professional standards.”
Lumicko is supported by the school’s Industry Advisory Panel, which includes Mediha Mahmood, CEO of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia, Dato’ Ts Dr Haji Amirudin bin Abdul Wahab, CEO of CyberSecurity Malaysia, and Anissa Maria Anis, a partner at Christopher & Lee Ong specializing in media and telecommunications law. The Panel ensures the platform meets professional standards for ethics, copyright, and cybersecurity, while exposing students to real industry practices.
According to Mediha Mahmood, “Lumicko provides students a structured space to produce and publish content responsibly, while building their understanding of industry standards. As an Industry Advisory Panel member, I see Lumicko as an important bridge between education and Malaysia’s professional content ecosystem — ensuring future talent enters the industry with the skills, confidence, and ethical grounding needed to thrive.”
The platform is built into various programs at the School of Media and Communication, such as journalism, public relations, advertising, and digital media production. This allows students to gain practical experience from the beginning to the end of the production process, from coming up with ideas to publishing work. By combining education, creativity, and technology, Lumicko shows Taylor’s University’s dedication to improving digital media education and preparing a new generation of skilled professionals for careers in streaming, content production, and other growing digital fields.
During the launch, a group of industry and academic experts, including Prema Ponnudurai (Founder of Lumicko and Head of School of General Studies and Languages at Taylor’s University), Datuk P. Kamalanathan (Former Deputy Minister of Education in Malaysia), Peter Wong (Filmmaker and CEO of ACE Pictures Entertainment LLC), Prem Anand Rajahram (Vice President of Content at Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad), and Anissa, talked about how universities can support creative talent. They highlighted how Lumicko is important for meeting the changing needs of Malaysia’s and the global media landscape.
Lumicko is now available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, enabling students, educators, and industry professionals to seamlessly access and engage with the platform’s growing library of original student-produced content.
