Sony announces Xperia 1 VII, introduces ‘Xperia Intelligence’ for camera capabilities, audio playback, and content viewing

Sony has launched its flagship smartphone Xperia 1 VII, developed with its ‘α (Alpha)’ cameras, ‘Walkman’ players, and ‘BRAVIA’ televisions, incorporating advanced technologies from these devices. AI technologies, optimized for Xperia as ‘Xperia Intelligence’, enhance camera capabilities, audio playback, and content viewing. Xperia 1 VII introduces innovative features like ‘AI Camerawork’ and ‘Auto Framing’ for stable, well-composed video capture, even if you look away from the screen.

New features: ‘AI Camerawork’ and ‘Auto Framing’

A camera feature that allows you to shoot with a stable composition without having to focus on the shooting screen

The new ‘AI Camera Work’ feature helps you create professional-looking videos that are stable and well-framed. It keeps your subject in the center of the shot, even if you’re moving around while filming. This is made possible by advanced technology that stabilizes the image and estimates your posture, which helps beginners make great videos.

There’s also a feature called ‘Auto Framing’ that uses AI to track your subject and automatically adjusts the framing. When you’re filming a moving subject, you just need to point the camera in their direction, and it will capture the scene without you having to follow them. Auto Framing allows you to create two types of videos: one that shows the entire scene and another that focuses closely on the subject.

Ultra wide-angle lens

Xperia 1 VII features three rear cameras, including a new 16mm ultra wide-angle lens with a larger 48MP 1/1.56-inch sensor, about 2.1 times larger than the previous model, enabling clear night shots similar to full-frame cameras with low noise and a wide dynamic range. It minimizes distortion and captures close-up shots from 5cm for incredible macro photography. The wide-angle lens provides 24mm/48mm (2x optical zoom) and includes the ‘Exmor T for mobile’ image sensor for excellent low-light performance. This sensor allows for high-quality videos even when cropping images using AI Camerawork and Auto Framing, while the telephoto lens offers optical zoom from 85mm to 170mm for high-resolution images of distant subjects. Sony also adds a slightly larger shutter button for the Xperia 1 VII.

Xperia’s best sound quality to date, inheriting the DNA of Walkman

New components used in Walkman devices have been added to improve sound quality in the circuit design. This boosts clarity when using wired headphones, making it feel like listening on a dedicated music player. In addition to wired connections, the high-quality enhancement technology ‘DSEE Ultimate’ leverages AI, allowing for enjoyable sound even from compressed streaming audio. The full-stage stereo speakers of Xperia, noted for their sound quality, have also been fine-tuned to provide clearer audio across all frequency ranges, from high to low.

Display that reproduces BRAVIA’s high picture quality according to the viewing environment

To enhance viewing in bright conditions, a new light sensor has been added to the back of the device, allowing it to adjust brightness and color based on the environment. It accurately detects surrounding light, switching to the best brightness, color range, and color temperature. When watching outdoors, the improved display panel and ‘Sunlight Vision’ feature make it easier to see in direct sunlight, ensuring a better viewing experience.

High performance powered by the latest chipset and a battery that supports two days of active use

Equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, the NPU, CPU, and GPU have each improved by over 40%, providing fast AI processing for photography and gaming while using less battery. With “Processing Optimization” enabled, it can save up to 10% power for activities like social media, web browsing, and online videos, allowing for up to two days of use. Additionally, it supports four OS version upgrades and six years of security updates for long-term use.

Consideration for the environment and accessibility

Xperia 1 VII offers camera accessibility features, including a function that provides horizontal measurement information via sound and vibration. The Android ‘TalkBack’ feature has unique Sony enhancements, allowing users to quickly access frequently used menu items. Additionally, the product box and internal tray use Sony’s Original Blended Material for a plastic-free packaging solution. About 84% of materials in the device use environmentally conscious plastics like SORPLAS, made from recycled and plant-based resins.

Style Cover with Stand for Xperia 1 VII (XQZ-CBFS)

A dedicated cover for the Xperia 1 VII (sold separately) includes a stand for vertical and horizontal use. It provides a grip for easy handling and stable shooting with the included ring strap. Available in three colors that match the device, the cover is made from approximately 78% environmentally conscious resins, including SORPLAS.

Pricing and Availability

Xperia 1 VII will be available in Slate Black, Moss Green and Orchid Purple in Malaysia from mid-July 2025.
