Before I start the review for the OPPO Reno7, I have to tell that I’m not a fan of portrait shots all this while. But after testing the device, I changed my mind and start to amazed with OPPO Reno7’s capability to shoot DSLR-like bokeh photos.
You can also watch the video review of the Reno7 on TrendGrnd’s official YouTube channel now. With that say, let’s learn more about the OPPO Reno7 after testing it for 2 weeks.
Design – Slim and compact

Let’s start with the design of the OPPO Reno7. The overall body of the smartphone is very slim and compact as official numbers stated it has approx. 7.81mm thickness and just weight about 173g.
The volume rocker and sim card slot tray is located on the left while the power button (with green line) is on the right. On the bottom, you get a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C charging port and a slanted design speaker grill. The positioning is okay but I hoped OPPO could have just flushed the volume rocker and power button together for a seamless positioning.

On the back, the cover uses OPPO Glow technology to provide amazing colour effect. Not only that, it is fingerprint and smudges free too. The camera bump design is minimalistic with less protruding. Perfect to use the phone on a flat surface.
Performance – Good enough for gaming and everyday task for a mid-range smartphone
Despite being a mid ranger smartphone, the OPPO Reno7 is powerful enough for everyday task and gaming. Powered by Mediatek Dimensity 900, you get enough performance and 5G connectivity.

Paired with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage, you can expect the device to be use for a long time. There is RAM extended feature on the device where users can add up to 5GB RAM. Last but not least, it is using ColorOS 12 with Android 11 and it is pretty good as it has various features and tricks to use.

While I don’t focus on benchmark numbers, I have tried out it’s gaming performance on titles such as Asphalt 9, COD mobile and Genshin Impact. As for Genshin Impact, it is better to set to Medium setting at 30 fps for smooth gameplay. Overall, you are going to enjoy gaming with OPPO Reno7.
Cameras – Portrait shot, main camera and selfie camera is the main hero here

For the camera on the OPPO Reno7, it has rear triple camera setup (64MP Main camera, 8MP Ultrawide camera and 2MP Macro camera) and a 32MP selfie camera.

For photography, both front and rear camera capture pretty good shots for broad daylight. The 64MP main camera is the champ here as it still capture good low light shots. The ultrawide and macro camera requires good lighting so you better be prepared when shooting low light conditions. The selfie camera also takes good photo in good lighting and low light condition. If you ever need to shoot at low light conditions, the Night Mode works for the main camera, ultrawide camera and selfie camera. You also have the option to toggle on or off for HDR and AI mode when shooting photos.

In the video department, you can shoot up to 4K 30fps with the main camera. The ultrawide and selfie camera can only shoot up to 1080p 30 fps video. The 4K is pretty good but lacks EIS and the colours is a bit saturated. The ultrawide video will suffer noisy in low light conditions so make sure to use it at properly lit area. Selfie videos are pretty good for vlogs. There is AI Highlight Video feature for videos on the rear and front camera which stated to assist in low light conditions. However, I find that it mostly add HDR and saturation.

For the Portrait shots, its available for rear main camera and selfie camera only. You can adjust from F0.95 to F16 to change the bokeh effect. Now here is what I really love for selfie Portrait shots, the bright photo during low light situation. I was surprised how the selfie camera able to capture bright portrait shot when I’m at basement car park and outside during night time. The main camera is able to capture excellent portrait shot but it’s a bit too contrast for my liking. You also can do bokeh video which called as Bokeh Flare Portrait video but the videos are limited to 720p and if you’re quite picky, the edge detection is not accurate all the time. For casual use, the Bokeh Flare Portrait video is amazing as you also can adjust from F0.95 to F16 to change the bokeh effect.

There are other camera modes for OPPO Reno7 but the only one really useful is the Pro, Extra HD and Dual-View Video.
Display and Audio – Good display, average speaker

The OPPO Reno7 uses a 6.4 inches AMOLED panel that supports 90 Hz refresh rate and up to 180Hz touch sampling rate. The display is fluid to scroll, colours are quite accurate and the brightness is acceptable for indoor and outdoor usage. You will definitely love to binge watch and play games on the Reno7. If you want me to nitpick on the display, I would say the chin bezel which is kind of big. Then again, the flat display just make me forget about it.
As for the audio department, the mono bottom firing speaker is loud and bass level is adequate. But I do wished OPPO add a stereo speaker setup for Reno7 as the speaker is easily covered when playing games. If you need better listening experience, you use a wired (there is a 3.5mm headphone jack) or wireless headphone.
Battery – Good for a day usage with super fast charging speed

The device is packed with a 4500 mAh that supports 65W SUPERVOOC charging. Battery life will be enough to last your till end day but it depends on your usage activity. The 65W SUPERVOOC charging speed is phenomenally fast with OPPO claiming 31 mins of charge can get to 100% battery so don’t worry of the charging time.
Final verdict – Great for selfie lovers and portrait shooter

So, the OPPO Reno7 is priced at RM1,999 for the 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. While there are some shortcomings on certain areas, I do find the experience using it was quite splendid for a mid range smartphone. If you’re a selfie lover or like taking portrait shots, the OPPO Reno7 is highly suited and should be in your consider to buy for 2022 mid-range smartphone list.
