Porsche sets up facility in Malaysia for local assembled cars; committed to expand in ASEAN region

Porsche has recently announced the sports car maker will be setting up a facility in Malaysia for local assembly. The vehicles assembled at the facility will specifically match local requirements and will be available for Malaysia only. The facility will be set up together with long-standing partner Sime Darby Berhad.

However, Porsche did mentioned in their press release that the facility will be at a “small-scale” so don’t expect every models will be locally assembled (for now). The facility will operate alongside Porsche’s established European network of production sites. Porsche also said the facility will be expected to start operate from 2022 onwards.

Setting up the facility in Malaysia has shown Porsche commitment in the ASEAN region to expand their business. Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche said this “Malaysia and the whole ASEAN is a region of great potential and we look forward to the first locally assembled models reaching our Malaysian customers next year”. He also added that “As Porsche is moving into a new era of mobility, Malaysia and the ASEAN region are gaining an increasing importance. This step now is part of a long-standing initiative to keep pace with rapidly evolving customer and market demands.”

It will be interesting to see Porsche building its momentum in ASEAN region as the region is synonymous with motorsport and automotive industry. Could we see a Porsche sportscar or electric vehicle to be build in Malaysia for international racing series? We’ll definitely can’t wait for electrifying moment.
