iQiyi has unveiled its latest international slate, including four new Korean Original productions, two Filipino Originals, as well as new exclusive content from Thailand and Malaysia, at Asian Contents and Film Market 2021.
During the virtual showcase, Kuek Yu-Chuang, iQiyi’s Vice-President of International Business, said, “Over the past year, we’ve seen a very positive trend of international viewers consuming more Asian content as a whole. As the leading global streaming player rooted in Asia with a global footprint, iQiyi will double down on its investment in introducing premium pan-Asian content to the world. We are excited to play a crucial role in putting Asian content at the front and center, in collaboration with top-notch creators and talents from Korea and the Philippines, to bring compelling Original stories to our users in 191 territories.”
Expanding local original contents from Southeast Asia
In order to expand the Southeast Asian content, iQiyi has partnered with ABS-CBN to produce two original Filipino series for the global audience. The titles, Saying Goodbye and Hello, Heart, feature top Filipino talents, and are iQiyi’s first local Originals in the Southeast Asian region.
Saying Goodbye is headlined by Andrea Brillantes and Seth Fedelin, whose acting careers as an on-screen couple off with the highly successful TV drama Kadenang Ginto in the Philippines. The two stars will team up once again to breathe life into new memorable roles that are set to delight the millions of “SethDrea” fans. The series is about celebrating life despite all its challenges, and follows the story of Ricky and Elise, an unlikely pair brought together by their love for music and adventure.
Hello, Heart will star the multi-talented Gigi De Lana, known for both her acting skills and her viral music videos that have been hitting millions of views, alongside multi award-winning actor Gerald Anderson. The romantic comedy series tells the story of Heart, a beautiful, perky, and hardworking woman who’s had nothing but bad luck – until she meets her “lucky charm” Saul. Saul, an emotionless and business-as-usual man, hires Heart to pretend to be his wife in order please his grandmother with dementia.
Saying Goodbye and Hello, Heart are set to premiere worldwide this year exclusively on iQiyi International.
iQiyi also will be streaming local contents for Thailand and Malaysia market. For Thailand, Only You I Need Part 2 and Gen Y The Series 2 will be streaming exclusive on 2021 Q4 meanwhile for Malaysia (and Singapore), Gerak Khas Undercover and Cukup Derita Itu Part 2 will be streaming exclusive on 2021 Q4 as well.
Four Korean Original Productions Coming Soon in 2022
In Crazy Love, a genius maths tutoring center CEO (played by Kim Jae-wook) receives a death threat and tries to seek out the murderer by pretending to suffer memory loss. He even enters into a sham marriage with his introverted secretary Lee Shin Ah (played by Krystal Jung), who is diagnosed with terminal illness. Between them, a scary yet sweet romance blossoms. The show was directed by Kim Jung Hyun, who was behind the popular romantic-mystery drama series Awaken, and co-produced with leading studio Story Hunter Productions.
“Us At One Point is produced by GTist, a drama production company behind multiple hit series such as Hometown Cha Cha Cha and Hotel Deluna. The tragic love story is centered around reincarnation, where a couple have to endure a curse which forces them to endure the pain of being unable to be together no matter how many times they meet.”
My Oppa Is An Idol is an Original series co-produced with STUDIO N, a production company owned by South Korea’s largest webtoon publisher. It follows an amusing story of the chaos that ensues when a fussy entertainment agency representative, a famous idol, and said idol’s loyal fan, have to live together under the same roof.
Weekday Wife is an upcoming romantic comedy, where a woman being groomed to be a rich heiress rejects an arranged marriage orchestrated by her adopted ‘jaebul’ family – and decides to become a “wife-for-hire” instead. This production partnership with STUDIO605 will draw into the studio’s deep expertise in art direction and creating memorable romance scenes.
iQiyi also teased audiences with an exclusive glimpse of two highly anticipated iQiyi x Studio Dragon co-productions. Director You Sun Dong greeted fans from the set of Bad and Crazy, drumming up excitement for the hero-themed show, starring Lee Dong Wook and Wi Ha Jun, set to premiere in December.
Fans also enjoyed a table reading Shooting Stars, which has just begun production, with stars Lee Sung-kyung and Kim Young-dae as the production begins.
