Sony has officially launched the new FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a super-telephoto 100 mm – 400 mm zoom lens for 35mm full-frame Alpha E-mount cameras. Sony Malaysia has confirmed the new lens is coming here, so let’s learn more.

The lens offers a 100-400 mm super-telephoto zoom range in a lightweight body weighing about 654 g, making it easy to carry. Its design aids in handling during handheld shooting and quick framing. Users can capture striking images of hard-to-approach subjects like birds and sports while also enjoying unique landscape photography. The ‘compression effect’ helps make nearby subjects and distant backgrounds appear closer together. With an optional teleconverter, the lens can reach focal lengths of up to 800 mm or 1,200 mm in APS-C mode.

Excellent image quality is guaranteed at any shooting distance, thanks to its optical design with two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and two aspherical elements that reduce aberrations for clear images throughout the zoom range. The subject stands out beautifully with a natural, soft bokeh due to its 9-blade circular aperture and control of spherical aberration. Additionally, with strong close-up capabilities — a minimum focusing distance of 0.86 m at the telephoto end and 1.13 m at the wide end, plus a maximum magnification of 0.41x — users can capture not only distant subjects but also detailed close-ups of flowers, insects, and other nearby objects.

The linear motor drive provides fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus, making it easier to capture moving subjects. This lens also works well for high-speed continuous shooting with autofocus and exposure tracking at around 120 frames per second when paired with the full-frame mirrorless camera α9 III.
Its built-in optical image stabilization helps reduce camera shake while shooting without a tripod, allowing for clear images even of distant subjects. The lens also works with the camera’s Active Mode image stabilization to improve the quality of both still images and videos, reducing blurriness when shooting by hand. Additionally, it includes a breathing compensation function that corrects changes in the view caused by focus adjustments during video recording.
