Google has announced that all 20 public universities have enabled Gemini for Education for almost 600,000 students and 75,000 faculty members. These universities now use Gemini as part of their existing Google Workspace for Education system, offering AI-powered assistance for research and learning. The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has provided 40,000 faculty members with Google AI Pro for Education for better access to premium AI models, and 128,000 students have received NotebookLM Enterprise to enhance their research and writing. This initiative aims to support Malaysia’s goal of becoming an AI-driven nation by 2030.
Through these initiatives, students and teachers at public universities in Malaysia can now use Gemini 3.1 Pro — the most advanced reasoning model — enhanced by LearnLM, which is designed for learning. They can take advantage of features like Guided Learning, a tool that helps students understand concepts deeply instead of just finding quick answers, and Deep Research, which acts as a personal research assistant.
In addition to technology access, we are offering strong training to help students and faculty learn about AI. Programs like Gemilang, the Google Skills platform, free Google AI courses, Gemini Certification for University Students, and Google Career Launchpad aim to enhance skills, personalize learning, and prepare for future jobs.
Here are some examples of how key Malaysian institutions are using Google AI tools.
Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP): Personalizing education with Gems

UniMAP is enhancing student learning through Gems, customizable versions of Gemini that help users become experts on any topic without coding. A university lecturer created a custom Gem that acts as a study partner for his Integrated Circuits Design and MEMS Design and Fabrication students in the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technology. This Gem supports them with their specific curriculum, making their learning experience more interactive and personal.
Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM): Deep Research and digital etiquette

In the Introduction to New Media Communications course at USIM, students use Gemini’s Deep Research and NotebookLM to analyze social media and learn about digital etiquette. They also upload lecture notes to NotebookLM to create study guides, summaries, and quiz questions for exam preparation.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM): Research-backed success with NotebookLM

Research at UPM shows that AI tools like NotebookLM are helping to improve literacy and build student confidence. Undergraduates use it to improve literature reviews and create podcasts from study materials, which has increased their positive feelings about technology and lowered their resistance to academic research. This method has reinforced UPM’s leadership in flexible learning while keeping students competitive and efficient in a global environment.
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS): Leading with community

UNIMAS is training over 500 lecturers in Google Workspace for Education and certifying 120 as Gemini Certified Educators. Nearly 500 students are also earning certifications. By combining secure AI tools with training, Google is helping students and educators gain essential skills for the future. This partnership supports Malaysia’s vision, and the company are excited to see what this new generation will achieve.
