Canteen Malaya has officially hosted its grand opening, located at Jalan Alor, offering a new seafood dining experience for both Malaysian diners and international visitors. The restaurant serves fresh, high-quality Malaysian seafood in a comfortable, air-conditioned space, perfect for relaxed, long meals instead of the quick service typical of street-side stalls.
The highlight of Canteen Malaya is its live seafood selection and open kitchen, allowing diners to feel closer to their food from the moment they choose it until it’s served.
“Our focus is simple: to serve fresh, honest seafood to everyday diners,” said Ms Patricia Wong, Management Representative of Canteen Malaya.
“Canteen Malaya was created specifically for Jalan Alor – a street that welcomes Malaysians and visitors from around the world in search of good local food. We wanted an open kitchen where guests can watch their seafood being prepared, in a space where they can take their time over a meal.”
Long known to locals and visitors for its outdoor seafood stalls and lively atmosphere, Jalan Alor is reflected indoors at Canteen Malaya, which offers a quieter, modern environment. The restaurant is designed around a central garden with lots of greenery and natural light from the skylight above. It features warm wood finishes and earthy colors, creating a calming space amidst the busyness of Jalan Alor.
Guests can choose their seafood—from crab and tiger prawns to fresh fish—before it is cooked right in front of them in the open kitchen. Crab is the star of the menu, with over 30 different flavors and dishes, including 12 special recipes like Salted Egg Crab, Kam Heong Crab, Sour and Spicy Crab, Indonesian Crab, and White Pepper Crab. In addition to crab, diners can enjoy large tiger prawns, freshly prepared fish, and delicious steamed clams and squid.
The restaurant has four levels and can seat up to 700 guests. The basement has the main kitchen; the ground floor is where most dining occurs; the first floor offers more dining space and private rooms; and the second floor features an event hall for up to 250 guests, making Canteen Malaya suitable for everyday meals as well as private parties and larger celebrations.
