Audi A5 and S5 models rear lighting panels using OLEDWorks’ Atala digital OLED 2.0 technology

OLEDWorks has officially announced a continued collaboration with Audi as the official supplier of digital OLED rear lighting panels for the new Audi A5 and S5. This partnership brings the second-generation digital OLED technology (digital OLED 2.0), produced under the Atala brand, to the forefront of automotive lighting innovation, which marks a tenfold expansion from 6 to approximately 60 high-contrast segments per panel since the first-generation.

The new Audi A5, S5, and Q6 e-tron feature advanced digital OLED technology for customizable lighting, offering up to eight distinct digital light signatures that enhance aesthetics and functionality.

The six digital rear OLED panels in the Audi A5 and S5 consist of 364 individually controlled segments that enable impressive communication. The active digital light signature showcases the car’s unique character, producing a new image several times per second using Audi’s special algorithm.

“The inclusion of second-generation digital OLED lighting in the Audi A5 and S5 highlights the exceptional capabilities of Atala technology,” said David DeJoy, CEO of OLEDWorks. “Our ongoing collaboration with Audi underscores our commitment to delivering innovative lighting solutions that enhance vehicle personalization and safety.”

The digital OLED rear lights in the Audi A5 and S5 are designed to make driving safer and improve communication. One feature is the communication light that uses data from other vehicles to create a special light pattern. This pattern helps alert other drivers about potential dangers using warning symbols.

To increase safety, this light also shows a unique signal to warn drivers when people inside the car are about to get out. This helps keep everyone safe on the road. Additionally, the communication light shows the status of park assist when the car is parked automatically, letting others know it’s safe to approach.

“The new digital OLED rear lights 2.0 in the Audi A5 and S5 represent a significant advancement in automotive lighting functionality,” said Dr. Werner Thomas, Project Manager OLED-Lighting at AUDI AG. “This innovative technology not only enhances the visual appeal of our vehicles but also improves safety and communication on the road.”

OLEDWorks is exhibiting at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, from 7-10 January 2025 in Las Vegas, NV, and showcasing their most advanced lighting technology, and OLED 2.0 in the Audi SQ6 e-tron at Booth #4466 in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
