10,000 Esports Enthusiast took part in Malaysia Digital Creativity Festival 2021 Gaming Tournaments

More than 10,000 esports enthusiast across Malaysia took part in 10 esports tournaments organised in conjunction with the Malaysia Digital Creativity Festival (MYDCF) 2021, a gamified expo by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). 

Driven by strong support and interest in the esports arena, the tournaments returned for the fourth time as part of LEVEL UP KL under the umbrella of MYDCF21.

Among the games that were competed were PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile (PUBGM), Mobile Legend Bang Bang (MLBB), Apex Legends, Garena Free Fire, Valorant, Wild Rift, FIFA22, Guilty Gears and Malaysian very own local-made-games; Ejen Ali: Agents Arena.

“The tournaments are meant to embrace and celebrate holistic participation from the public to be part of the esports community in Malaysia. Aside from that, MYDCF 2021 also offered Masterclasses and Panel Sessions to esports enthusiasts and public throughout November 2021,” said Mohan Low, Director of Digital Creative Content from MDEC.

MDEC via MYDCF collaborated with Rev Media Group, Malaysia Esports Arena (MEA), ESDK Services, Kitamen, Gamesbond, Flash Vision and Axis Esports to hold the esports tournament, which carried a pool prize of RM70,000.

The tournament captured more than 4,000 live viewers each round. 

AE MY is was grand winner of the Level Up KL Junior Cup 2021. They took down 15 other teams competing on Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and defeated Team HAQ in the finals. 

“I am happy for winning the competition and am optimistic of the prospect of becoming a pro-gamer. 

“This experience was a steep learning curve for my team as we juggled between school and exploring the opportunities of a potential career in esports,” said 15 year old Meor Angelo of AE MY. 

Aside from the esport tournaments, MYDCF masterclasses were conducted from 6th to 7th November 2021 feature a line-up that included Malaysian Dota 2 professional player Cheng Jin Xiang or more famously known by his in-game name ‘NothingToSay’ and his China-based Dota 2 team PSG.LGD. 

MYDCF also collaborated with Esports Integrated (ESI), an agency under Ministry of Youth & Sports to organise the esports “Sembang Game” conference. 

It featured prominent local and international speakers such as panelist, Eric Thor, Team Director of Team Fnatic; MissRose, Streamer; Siew Hao Zhen, Senior Manager of Esports Global Operations of Moonton; and Mathhew Issac, Professional Host & Caster.

The conference covered crucial topics for young esports enthusiasts such as “Game or Fame? Between Becoming an Influencer or A Successful Player” and “Regional/International Panels: Thoughts from Publishers – Sanctioned Tournaments and Future of Regional Competitions”.

“MYDCF forms part of MDEC’s long term strategy to grow the creative sector. This is very much in-line with the objectives set in the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDigital). 

“This event can help to enhance Malaysia’s standing to be a globally recognised games hub with an inclusive and supportive ecosystem,” added Mohan.
