U Mobile is the first telco company in Malaysia to offer network-level scam protection. Launched in February 2025, this initiative works with Cellusys, a leading provider of security solutions. So far, it has successfully blocked more than 265 million scam calls and fraudulent SMS attempts for its customers.
Using Cellusys’ Unified Signalling, SMS, and Voice Firewall solution, U Mobile effectively blocks scam attempts at the network level. Unlike general filters, all incoming calls and SMS are first checked by this solution and can be blocked if they seem suspicious, preventing them from reaching customers’ devices. This solution has safeguarded U Mobile customers from scam calls posing as authorities, SMS phishing attacks (smishing), fake caller identities, and large-scale criminal campaigns targeting Malaysian consumers.
“At U Mobile, we are committed to safeguarding our customers against fraudulent activities, which is why we took a proactive step to embed the advanced scam protection solution from Cellusys directly into our network as a core security capability available to all customers. We’re proud to be the first telco in Malaysia to launch a full-scale network-level scam protection and our efforts have delivered tangible results, with over 265 million scam calls and fraudulent SMS blocked, to date. We will continue to improve our network through technology to better protect customers across voice, messaging and data services. As we expand our next generation 5G network nationwide, security remains a core priority, because trusted connectivity is essential to a resilient Malaysian digital economy,” said Woon Ooi Yuen, Chief Technology Officer of U Mobile.
“U Mobile’s leadership in protecting its customers sets a powerful benchmark for Malaysia and the wider region. We are proud that Cellusys technology is the engine behind this nationwide protection, operating with the accuracy, resilience, and scale required to stop scams before they reach consumers. This deployment demonstrates what can be achieved when operators commit to proven, real-world defences rather than future roadmaps,” said Brendan Cleary, CEO of Cellusys.
According to the Global Anti-Scam Alliance*, 73% of Malaysians have reported scam calls and fraudulent SMS, making it one of the highest rates in Southeast Asia, with criminal groups increasingly targeting homes, seniors, and vulnerable people. Cellusys’ advanced platform analyzes network traffic to detect fraud with high precision. It uses detection methods designed for Malaysian threats to ensure accurate monitoring of voice and messaging, adapt to changing fraud tactics, and provide reliable protection for operators worldwide.
