SJK (C) Cheah Fah has broken ground for the second phase of its expansion. This is an important step for Johor’s growing southern area and shows Sunway’s long-term support for education.
The primary school, which opened in 2022 with RM18 million from Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, was the first of 10 approved Chinese national-type schools in Johor. In just under four years, student enrollment has grown to over 820, nearing the school’s capacity of 1,000 students.
“As Sunway City Iskandar Puteri matures into a family-oriented township, access to quality education becomes fundamental,” said Gerard Soosay, CEO of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri.
“Education remains the most powerful pathway out of poverty and the strongest foundation for social mobility. This expansion ensures public schooling capacity grows in tandem with population growth,” he added.
The project will add 12 new classrooms, increasing the total capacity to 1,500 students, and expand the canteen so that all students can eat at the same time. The design also considers future changes in policy, such as allowing six-year-olds into Standard One.
Sunway has invested RM23 million in the school so far, including RM5 million promised after a fundraising dinner in 2025, which raised RM1 million from over 900 donors.
This expansion is taking place as Johor experiences renewed growth due to industrial investment, cross-border activities, and increasing demand for housing. Construction will continue without interrupting classes, and the goal is to finish by the end of the year.
The larger campus will strengthen Sunway City Iskandar Puteri’s image as a family-oriented, education-focused area and show Sunway’s commitment to investing in education alongside developing the township.
SJK (C) Cheah Fah is one of eight schools supported by Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Malaysia’s largest education-focused social enterprise.
So far, Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation have contributed over RM62 million towards these schools. The foundation has also given out more than RM967 million in scholarships and grants to thousands of deserving students across the country.
