8th MIFFest officially kicks off with prominent celebrities and showcase of latest creative storytelling movies

The 8th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) officially began at MyTOWN KL, kicking off nine days of cinematic brilliance and cultural exchange. The evening featured glamour, heartfelt tributes, and storytelling, highlighting MIFFest’s prominence as a leading international film festival in Southeast Asia.

The evening kicked off with a red carpet event, welcoming filmmakers, jury members, and celebrities like Zizan Razak, Fabian Loo, Rachel Tan, and Sangeeta Krishnasamy. Guests enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of the MIFFest community as they celebrated the festival’s new chapter.

On stage, festival ambassadors Bront Palarae, Siti Saleha, and Daiyan Trisha engaged the audience, sharing their connections to film and the importance of MIFFest and storytelling in uniting people.

A warm welcome was delivered by Joanne Goh, Founder and President of MIFFest, who in her speech shared: “This year, our theme is Infinity, a word that reflects the endless possibilities of cinema. Stories have the power to move us, challenge us, and bring us together. In times of division, film reminds us of what we all share: emotion, humanity, and hope. Let’s celebrate not just movies, but the imagination, connection, and magic they bring.”

Following her speech, the president presented a token of appreciation to the MIFFest Preliminary Selection Committee and the Jury Panel for the Semi-Final Stage, in recognition of their dedication, expertise, and contribution to curating this year’s exceptional film lineup.

The evening culminated with the screening of Ninavau, the official opening film of the 8th MIFFest, directed by Bebbra Mailin. This powerful feature follows a Kadazan woman returning to Sabah for her sister’s wedding while undergoing a personal transformation. The film explores family, cultural identity, and inner truth, offering an authentic glimpse into East Malaysian life.

Ninavau‘s full feature return underscores MIFFest’s commitment to underrepresented voices in Malaysian cinema. The festival’s excitement extends beyond screenings, with the opening ceremony streamed live on TikTok, engaging audiences globally.

Additionally, MIFFest features the ASEAN Film & TV Summit – ASEAN On Screen, celebrating Southeast Asia’s creative diversity. The festival will culminate in the 8th Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA), showcasing nine exceptional films from nearly 700 submissions, and will be broadcast on various platforms for wider access. The MGGA promises to be an unforgettable celebration of cinematic excellence.

From 19 to 27 July 2025, MIFFest invites film lovers and curious minds to enjoy a unique festival experience. With a revamped lineup, immersive events, open-air screenings, and global industry forums, this year’s festival promises to engage and inspire.
